March 27th Weekly Update

Good afternoon MCS friends and family.  Hope everyone is staying dry! Here is the link to Mr. Potter’s weekly update for this week. There is lots of great information inside, but of importance is a lunch menu change for MCS students only. We will be having an author visit tomorrow for 1-3rd grade students, which will be occurring in the cafeteria/gym. As a result, the kindergartners will be having lunch in their classrooms. Lunch will now be  turkey and cheese on a roll, dragon punch, goldfish crackers, vegetable, applesauce, and milk.

Also, I wanted to take one more moment to express thanks to #TruMooMilk and #ThanksPTOToday for supplying us with some yummy chocolate milk during our school’s Reading Under the Stars event.  During the event, the PTA also had a photo booth with some fun character props for our students to enjoy. If you have taken any photos of that night, please consider sharing with us, we’d love to see them! Use #MCSPTAStars on your social media account when sharing them, or put them in the comments here. Here’s some pictures we took:

What’s Happening in March

Good Monday morning MCS families and friends! Can you believe we are gearing up for a big nor’easter tomorrow?  It’s looking like it will start mid-morning and last through till Wednesday. Any guesses on whether school is canceled?

Thankfully the snow will be finished by Thursday, which is our next Family Movie Night in our gym! This time we will be showing Storks, and thanks to a generous donation by the Saucier family, we will have a bigger screen to make viewing easier! We will again be selling popcorn, some baked goods, juices and waters. Additionally, we will be raffling off a Family Movie Night gift basket filled with the movie Storks, popcorn, and candy! Kiddos are welcome to wear their jammies, and parents/guardians can bring chairs to use. Reminder that when the movie is playing to be respectful to those around you and please limit the talking. We want all our families to enjoy their evening!

Also happening this month, and through April 24th, we are participating in the Maine Recycles Championship powered by CLYNK. For every dollar we raise between now and April 24th, Hannaford will give us an additional $0.50! You can request a bag or two (or three!) by commenting here, returning the slip from the flyer that was sent home, messaging us on Facebook, or emailing us at  Let us know your kiddos name, teachers name, and how many bags, and we will get those to you within a day or two via your kiddos backpack! The best part of this fundraiser? Any relative who lives near a CLYNK redemption center can participate. Simply give them a bag, or have them log on to their account and choose to donate any of their own earnings from their CLYNK account to us! Search for Margaret Chase Smith School PTA-Sanford.

Thank you all for your continued support for what the PTA does. All money we raise goes back into the school to provide buses for field trips and assemblies for our students, planners and homework folders, supplies for the teachers and staff, new playground equipment, etc.  If you are interested in supporting our work even more, consider joining our group or sponsoring us. You can do either by completing the membership form found here.  Now is a great time to join, as nominations for next years officers will be happening at the end of May, and to qualify as an officer you must be a member for at least 2 months. Don’t delay, join today!

Mr. Potter’s Weekly Update 1/30/17

Good Monday MCS families!

Can you believe February is just a couple days away? Does it seem like this year has been flying by to anyone else? As February approaches, so does the potential for more snow and colder temperatures. Remember to dress your kiddos in layers, and in particular snow pants, hats, mittens/gloves.

Mr. Potter’s Weekly Update has lots of great information. Reminder that Fridays in February will be Spirit Days. This coming Friday, February 3rd is “Wear your favorite sports team” day. Students are encouraged to wear shirts, hats, sweaters etc. showing off their favorite sports team.

An important part of the PTA is being advocates for our students and school, and sometimes for the PTA itself. There will be public hearing on a new bill sponsored in part by our own Rep. Anne-Marie Mastraccio, that would make all PTAs in Maine tax exempt. If you can’t make it to the hearings this Wednesday, please feel free to email or call our representatives to show support for this bill.

Thanks again to all the families that joined us for our first family movie night, we had over 100 people in our gym/cafeteria to enjoy The Secret Life of Pets! If you went to the movie night, we’d love your feedback. What did you like, what would you change, any thoughts or ideas are welcome! Just leave us a comment here, message us on Facebook, or send an email to Watch for flyers and more information on our next movie night which will be occurring in March.

Keep an eye on our website and Facebook page in the coming weeks for the roles and responsibilities of the officer positions as well as committee opportunities.

Snow day reminder

Do you think we will have a snow day tomorrow? How about a delay? It seems even the meteorologists aren’t quite sure yet how much snow we will be getting in our neck of the woods.

Since there is the possibility of enough snow to cause some type closure, make sure you are signed up to receive instant alert messages from Superintendent Mr. Theoharides. To learn how to set this up, or to check where you have signed up to receive these alerts visit this page on the school’s website.

Also- refresh yourself with the policy for school closings and where else you may find the information. Mr. Theoharides put out a letter on the schools website identifying the several ways you can find out whether there is a delay or cancellation of school throughout the season. Click here to read the letter.

Along with the areas noted by Mr. Theoharides, remember to check our Facebook page also as we will post the information as well. Have a great Sunday evening!

Easy ways to help us earn!

I’ve finally done it, I earned 3 school dollars through the Hannaford Helps School program!                                                         hannafordhelpsschooldollars
If you are a Hannaford shopper, you may have seen those little tags near various products with the school house on it. The deal is, if you buy 4 participating products then Hannaford will give you $3 school dollars to be placed in our school slot on the collection tower. The catch- the 4 products have to be bought within one transaction. This promotion goes on through December 3rd so there is still time to collect those school dollars! Click here for more information, including a list of participating products.

Hannaford also helps us earn money with Clynk- bottle return. This is a great fundraiser that we run year round.
The best part of this fundraiser is anyone with returnables that live near a Hannaford can help. Need more bags? Leave a comment here, message us on Facebook, or click“>here to fill out our google form and we will get them in your kiddos backpack the next day! We also keep a stash in the front office for your convenience.

Another easy way to help us earn some money, is through Box Tops. Keep clipping and collecting them in a baggie or on a collection sheet and send them in with your student.

Don’t buy a lot of products with box tops? Check with your family and friends, or even your work mates. Anyone can help you collect, and every little box top earns us $0.10! We use the money raised through box tops to fund the buses for spring field trips. New for Box Tops for Education, a free and easy to use app for your mobile device. There are monthly products that if purchased will earn you bonus box tops. Simply down load the app, select the products you are buying from the list, then scan in your receipt. The box tops are automatically added to your account, which you can link to Margaret Chase Smith PTA! Click here for the list of participating products, coupons, and information on the brand new app!

Finally- if you are an Amazon shopper, we’d love for you to use It is used to same way with the same great products as does.
When you shop on AmazonSmile, choose Margaret Chase Smith PTA as your charity of choice (once selected it will display as Maine Parent Teacher Association INC. This is correct!!), and for every qualified purchase, Amazon will donate 0.5% to us! This is a no cost to you fundraiser, the money comes directly from Amazon, based on how much you buy. So if you are gearing up for Black Friday and holiday shopping, then please consider helping us out!

Thank you to all our MCS families and friends who continue to support us!
